چکیده

Asymptomatic Toxoplasma infection of both man and animals is common in the Americas. This is shown by the high prevalence of Toxoplasma antibody, commonly found in 50-60% of human subjects 20-30 years old, in the absence of apparent clinical disease (I). Similarly, serologic surveys have found antibody in normal animals (2). Clinical illness also occurs, however, such as the illness that led to Splendore’s discovery of Toxoplasma in a spontaneously diseased rabbit at the Portuguese Hospital in Sao Paulo (3). In this vein, postmortem examination of babies and adults was instrumental in recognizing neonatal and adult toxoplasmosis in Latin America (4, 60). What immunologic insights can be drawn from the simultaneous presence of asymptomatic, clinical, and even fatal infections in animals and man? (It seems appropriate to start with a brief general discussion of toxoplasmosis immunology, because that is basic to an understanding of clinical toxoplasmosis, its diagnosis, and its optimal treatment.) Regarding man, Table 1 compares diverse human immunologic responses to Toxoplasma infection, grouping these

The impact of socioeconomic factors on the efficiency of voluntary toxoplasmosis screening during pregnancy: a population-based study

BACKGROUND Congenital toxoplasmosis is associated with severe complications. German state health insurance covers rubella, but not toxoplasmosis, immunity screening. We analysed the effect of socioeconomic factors on the efficiency of private toxoplasmosis screening during pregnancy. METHODS Toxoplasmosis and rubella screening data (n = 5402 mothers) were collected within the population-based...

Vaccination with Toxoplasma gondii SAG-1 protein is protective against congenital toxoplasmosis in BALB/c mice but not in CBA/J mice.

We evaluated the effect of vaccination with the SAG1 protein of Toxoplasma gondii against congenital toxoplasmosis in mice with different genetic backgrounds. In BALB/c mice (H-2(d)), vaccination reduced the number of infected fetuses by 50% and was associated with a mixed type 1 and type 2 immunity. In CBA/J mice (H-2(k)), vaccination increased the number of infected fetuses by 50% and was ass...

بررسی سرواپیدمیولوژی عفونت توکسوپلاسمادر زنان باردار شهر یزد سال 1391

Introduction: Toxoplasmosis, caused by a protozoan called" Toxoplasma gondii", is one of the most common parasitic infections in humans and animals throughout the world. Toxoplasma infection in pregnant women, especially at the first trimester of pregnancy, may lead to miscarriage or birth complications in the nervous system and ocular complications. Conducting such studies can provide practica...

Rat model of congenital toxoplasmosis: rate of transmission of three Toxoplasma gondii strains to fetuses and protective effect of a chronic infection.

The incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis in Fischer rats infected between the 8th and 12th days of pregnancy with three different strains of Toxoplasma gondii (RH, 76K, and Prugniaud) were 58.2, 35.2, and 62.8%, respectively. No infected fetuses were collected from rats previously infected with RH or Prugniaud strain parasites, even if the rats were reinfected during pregnancy. Since pups from...

Interleukin-10 and pathogenesis of murine ocular toxoplasmosis.

To understand the role of interleukin-10 (IL-10) in ocular toxoplasmosis, we compared C57BL/6 (B6) and BALB/c background mice lacking a functional IL-10 gene (IL-10(-/-)) and B6 transgenic mice expressing IL-10 under the control of the IL-2 promoter. Increased cellular infiltration and necrosis were observed in the eye tissue of IL-10(-/-) mice of both the B6 and BALB/c backgrounds with associa...

The SAG1 Toxoplasma gondii surface protein is not required for acute ocular toxoplasmosis in mice.

The SAG1 Toxoplasma gondii surface protein stimulates acute ileitis. To determine whether SAG1 is also important in the eye, wild-type or SAG1 knockout parasites were injected intravitreally into mice. No differences in retinal damage or parasite growth were observed, indicating that unlike the case for the intestine, factors besides SAG1 are important for retinal damage.
